3D Bioprinting Solutions biotechnology laboratory, Meal Source Technologies, as well as Aleph Farms and Finless Foods, are proud to announce successful result of the joint project which involved magnetic biofabrication of bovine, mummichog and rabbit myoblast/fibroblast constructs in order to lay the groundwork for renewable protein sources for long term manned missions. Additionally, results of this space experiment will be used to enhance the capacity for scalable cultured meat production on Earth.
This joint project combined both the unique technology of magnetic biofabrication, developed by 3D Bioprinting Solutions, and cutting-edge developments in cellular agriculture, accomplished by Meal Source Technologies, Aleph Farms, and Finless Foods in order to provide important stepping stones for the emerging industry of cultured meat production. 3 different meat types will be tested within the framework of this experiment: bovine myoblast/fibroblast tissue, provided by Aleph Farms, mummichog fibroblasts, provided by Finless Foods, and rabbit myoblast line, developed by Meal Source Technologies.
3D Bioprinting Solutions pioneered the technology of biofabrication in space by assembling thyroid gland and cartilage organ constructs in the Organ.Aut bioprinter on board the ISS back in December 2018. Data from the experiment confirmed the performance capabilities of the equipment and proved the feasibility of using three-dimensional magnetic bioprinting, which employs a magnetic field instead of a traditional solid biodegradable substrate "scaffold".
Meal Source Technologies is a newly founded US-based subsidiary of VIVAX BIO focused on bioprinting application in cellular agriculture.
Aleph Farms' unique non-GMO technology, co-developed with Professor Shulamit Levenberg of the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, relies on a natural process occurring in cows to regenerate and build muscle tissues.
Finless Foods is an early-stage biotechnology company whose mission is to develop and mass manufacture pioneering marine animal food products for human consumption. Their objective is to create seafood sustainably using scientific cellular agriculture technologies.
